Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences offers several programs to support research, service, travel and other projects by SLU students.
Father Michael Barber Undergraduate International Service Learning Award
The Barber International Service Learning Award honors former Dean Michael Barber, S.J.'s steadfast support of the Jesuit mission to engage in service and learning at a global level. Current undergraduate students engaged in an international service project can apply for up to $500 for expenses such as travel, lodging or project costs. Eligible undergraduates must be majoring in a discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences and can only receive the award once per academic year. Student Research Funds
The Knoedler Research Fund, the Drahmann Research Sciences Fund, the Primm Scholarship
and the Torrie Hester Award provide up to $500 in funding to help students conduct
research or present the results of their research. The associate dean who administers
the fund will determine the amount and appropriate funding source.
Eligible students must be majoring in a program or discipline within the College of
Arts and Sciences. No student will receive a student research award more than once
per academic year.
Proposals must be submitted by the faculty member(s) sponsoring the student(s)’ research.
However, certain types of proposals will need to be submitted once, in the aggregate,
to ensure parity and access within departments and across the College. These are as
follows:
- Multiple students going to the same conference/research destination
- Multiple students working in the same research laboratory
- Multiple students working on the same research project
An associate dean administers the funds for this award. Applications (due Oct. 1,
Feb. 15, and April 15) are judged on the project’s feasibility, the quality of the
research or creative plan, educational/professional value and the availability of
funds from all sources.

Graduate/Undergraduate Research Collaboration Fund
The Graduate/Undergraduate Research Collaboration Fund is intended to encourage projects
in which a graduate student and 1-2 undergraduates conduct research together under
the supervision of a full-time faculty member (who must hold Graduate Faculty status).
A project may encompass an interdisciplinary team of undergraduates, graduates and
faculty members from more than one department (at least one of the faculty members
must have Graduate Faculty status), though only one proposal per department or program
may be submitted. Applicants may request a maximum of $1,000 to support the research
collaboration. Funds may be requested to defray costs of items, including research
supplies, software programs and minor equipment. These funds may not be used for travel
because undergraduates can apply to the Undergraduate Research Funds and graduates
to the GSA for that purpose.

Graduate Student Foreign Travel Fund
The Graduate Student Foreign Travel Fund is intended to encourage travel that would
significantly enhance a graduate student’s training by research or study abroad, whether
during the summer or the academic year. In addition to personal development and enrichment,
travel abroad can enhance the student’s research skills, expand research networks,
provide access to specialized equipment and expertise, develop cultural diplomacy
skills, and ultimately improve career prospects. The proposed research or study abroad
must be clearly structured and ideally would build upon international connections
already existing among CAS faculty. Awards may be used to defray costs related to
travel, housing and books, but may not be used for travel to conferences because graduate
students can apply to the GSA for that purpose. Applicants may request a maximum of
$1,000 to support the proposed project. Only one proposal per department or program
may be submitted.
